Shockwave Therapy London
Persistent tendon pain can make running, training, walking or simply getting through the day harder than it should be. Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) offers a non-invasive treatment that uses controlled acoustic shockwaves to treat specific areas of persistent tendon and soft-tissue pain.
At Nordic Balance, we use shockwave alongside a rehabilitation plan and an initial assessment is required. Shockwave Therapy is available at our St. James’s, Clapham and Battersea clinics.
Stimulate tissue repair with shockwaves
Shockwave Therapy delivers controlled acoustic pressure waves through the skin to the affected tissue. It passes short, intense sound waves into affected tissues, increasing blood flow, providing an analgesic effect, and stimulating repair and regeneration.
For calcific tendon problems, shockwaves can also disrupt calcium deposits. Treatment is administered by our clinical team and is often combined with injury-specific rehabilitation, so you’re not simply treating the painful area; you’re also rebuilding the strength and movement your body needs.
Benefits of Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy can help reduce persistent pain, improve movement, support a return to activity and provide a non-invasive treatment option for certain tendon and soft-tissue problems.

Effectiveness of shockwave therapy
Shockwave therapy has been shown to be 90% effective in treating tendinopathy-related injuries and can be a useful option for persistent tendon and soft-tissue problems, particularly when symptoms haven’t improved enough with more conservative care. Results vary depending on the condition, how long you’ve had it and your wider rehabilitation plan.
That’s why we assess whether shockwave is appropriate rather than treating it as a guaranteed solution. If we don’t think it’s the right option, we’ll tell you.
Still have questions?
A handheld device delivers controlled acoustic shockwaves into the affected area. The aim is to influence pain and tissue response, while your wider rehabilitation programme addresses the strength and movement needed for recovery.
A course typically requires three to five sessions, although this depends on your condition and response to treatment. Your clinician will assess your progress and explain what they recommend rather than automatically booking unnecessary sessions.

Many major UK health insurers may cover shockwave therapy but this depends on your provider, policy and authorisation requirements. Contact us before booking through insurance and we’ll help you understand the process. Nordic Balance currently advises insured clients to contact the team before arranging treatment.
Shockwave therapy can feel uncomfortable while it is being applied, particularly around a sensitive tendon. Your practitioner can adjust the treatment to keep it manageable. Temporary soreness, redness or bruising can occur afterwards, but significant downtime is not usually expected. NICE identifies pain during or after treatment, redness and bruising among recognised effects.
This is an important part of how we use shockwave at Nordic Balance. We combine your treatment with rehabilitation relevant to your injury, helping you rebuild movement, strength, and tolerance rather than relying on shockwave alone.
