Shockwave therapy for lower back pain
An innovative clinical programme designed for persistent back stiffness and muscular pain that hasn’t responded to standard manual therapy or massage.
If you’ve been dealing with chronic lower back pain and your progress with treatment has stalled, Shockwave Therapy may offer another option. Built on encouraging early responses, the research & development programme is designed for patients whose progress with manual treatment has stalled.
By taking part, you can access treatment for £30 per session, while contributing anonymised data that will help us understand its potential role in supporting patients with persistent lower back pain.
What our clinical trial data shows
Our treatment protocols are grounded in ongoing clinical investigation. Initial analysis of our research logs reveals powerful, measurable responses
Stimulate tissue repair with shockwaves
Shockwave Therapy has long been the NICE-approved gold standard for stubborn tendon conditions like plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy. It delivers controlled acoustic pressure waves through the skin to the affected tissue, increasing blood flow. It can support circulation, tissue healing, and collagen production, while helping reduce pain, muscle tension, and inflammation, offering a non-invasive treatment option without medication or surgery.
Our Clinical Leads, Rebecca and Debbie, are pioneering refined protocols to explore how targeted acoustic sound waves can desensitise deep lumbar pain receptors, break stubborn muscle guarding, and stimulate local microcirculation in the lower back.
How the programme works
The programme is designed for patients who have experienced lower back pain, stiffness or muscle guarding for three months or longer, particularly where physiotherapy, sports massage or chiropractic care has provided only short-term relief and progress has plateaued.
It may be suitable if your symptoms are aggravated by prolonged sitting, standing or bending and you’re looking for a non-invasive, drug-free treatment option.
Strict clinical screening is used to make sure the programme is appropriate for you; it is not suitable for unexplained inflammatory pain that wakes you at night, progressive neurological symptoms such as severe numbness, pins and needles or leg weakness, spinal fractures, active systemic infections or during pregnancy.

If you are an active patient at Nordic Balance, your existing clinician can verify your suitability.
If you are new to the clinic, you will book an initial assessment with one of our R&D clinicians to confirm your pain is mechanical and appropriate for shockwave.
-
Sessions are streamlined and dedicated strictly to the acoustic shockwave protocol.
Delivered at a subsidised research rate of £30 per session (standard clinic rate is £100 per 30 min session).
-
We monitor your pain scores, range of motion, and functional mobility at each appointment to evaluate cumulative recovery.

Still have questions?
A handheld device delivers controlled acoustic shockwaves into the affected area. The aim is to influence pain and tissue response, while your wider rehabilitation programme addresses the strength and movement needed for recovery.
Radial shockwave feels like a series of fast, rhythmic pulses over the muscle. While certain tight spots can feel tender, your clinician calibrates the energy level to ensure it remains comfortable and well-tolerated. Most patients report a sensation of release immediately afterwards.
Because this is a targeted research protocol, the session is dedicated entirely to delivering acoustic energy to specific anatomical landmarks (such as the QL and multifidus). By removing unrelated modalities, we keep the treatment highly focused and deliver it at an accessible £30 trial rate.
Clinical response typically builds over a course of 5 to 8 weekly appointments. Our trial logs demonstrate that cumulative sessions provide sustained relief and lasting mobility improvements.
