Nordic Balance is proud to partner with Battersea Ironsides Rugby Club, providing pitch-side physiotherapy and rehabilitation support for players across the club. Having already supported more than 75 matches, we’re now expanding to cover more junior teams alongside the adult men’s and women’s sides. That means providing physiotherapy support across more than 200 matches and 12 teams.
For us, this partnership is about more than being there when someone gets injured. It means becoming part of the sporting community around our Battersea, Clapham and Wimbledon clinics, supporting players from the touchline through rehabilitation and, when needed, back onto the pitch.
Supporting Battersea Ironsides rugby teams
Battersea Ironsides has been part of South London sport since 1943 and today brings together senior, women’s, youth and mini rugby across a large playing community. The club describes itself as having one of the largest combined mini, youth and senior rugby memberships in London.
For Nordic Balance, that makes the partnership a natural extension of the work our clinicians already do with active people across South West London. Our team provides pitch-side physiotherapy at matches, with further assessment and rehabilitation available through Nordic Balance clinics when a player needs more support after the final whistle.
There is a personal connection too. Nordic Balance Director Pierre Meyer has coached junior teams at the club, including his own son’s squad, so Ironsides has been part of the Nordic Balance community long before the formal partnership began.
Pitch-side physiotherapy for rugby
Rugby places significant demands on the body. Tackles, changes of direction, sprinting, jumping and contact can all lead to injuries ranging from muscle and joint problems to situations that need more careful assessment.
Having a physiotherapist at the side of the pitch means players can be assessed when something happens rather than having to make that decision alone. Our pitch-side team can assess the injury, provide immediate support where appropriate and help decide whether a player should continue, come off or seek further medical care. That matters at every level of rugby, and particularly in junior sport where having an experienced clinician available can provide additional reassurance for players, coaches and parents.
Physiotherapist and fellow rugby player Greg Smith is among the Nordic Balance practitioners supporting Ironsides on match days, bringing clinical experience and an understanding of the sport’s demands.
Rugby injury rehabilitation after match day
Not every rugby injury ends when the match does. A player may need further assessment, hands-on treatment, exercise rehabilitation or a structured return to training before they are ready for full contact again.
Through the partnership, Ironsides players can access discounted treatment at our Battersea, Clapham and Wimbledon clinics. That allows care to continue beyond the sideline. Our clinicians can assess the injury in more detail, help restore movement and strength and progressively rebuild towards the demands of rugby. Treatment and exercise rehabilitation can be combined within one plan, with cross-referral within the Nordic Balance team where another area of expertise would help. It also gives players continuity of care from the early stages of an injury through to their return to training and matches.
A partnership rooted in the local community
Ironsides is more than a collection of rugby teams. Its mini, youth and senior sections bring together players, coaches, parents, volunteers and supporters from across the local area. The club’s stated purpose includes promoting participation in amateur sport and supporting social relationships between members, families, friends and the wider community. (Battersea Ironsides)
That community focus is an important part of why the partnership works for Nordic Balance. Our clinics in Battersea, Clapham and Wimbledon are part of the same South West London communities. Many of the people we treat are already running, training, playing sport and volunteering locally.
Supporting Ironsides lets us contribute our clinical expertise where it can have a practical impact, while strengthening relationships between our teams and the people around our clinics. Whether that is helping a junior player after a difficult tackle, supporting an adult player through rehabilitation or simply being present at the side of the pitch, it is a much more meaningful relationship than putting a logo on a shirt.
Growing our support for Battersea Ironsides
Our first phase of pitch-side support covered more than 75 matches. The programme is now growing to more than 200 matches across 12 teams, extending physiotherapy cover across additional junior teams as well as the adult men’s and women’s sides. As that programme grows, so does the team required to deliver it.
We are continuing to build our network of therapists and strength and conditioning support around the partnership, giving more players access to experienced care both at matches and during rehabilitation. For Nordic Balance, that growth reflects what the partnership was intended to become from the beginning: a long-term commitment to the players, families and wider community around Battersea Ironsides.
